Methoxy Propanol

Methoxy Propanol

Methoxy propanol, also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₁₀O₂. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a bitter taste and high flammability. This compound is used as a viscosity regulator in two-component epoxy systems and acrylics.

Applications:

  • Cleaning Agent: Methoxy propanol is an effective solvent known for its high cleaning power. It is utilized in many industrial cleaners and, to a limited extent, in household cleaning products. Due to its high volatility and evaporation rate, it is particularly useful for cleaning electronic circuits and products that cannot be cleaned with water.
  • Solvent in Chemical Production: It serves as a key ingredient in the production of propylene glycol methyl acetate (PMA), a chemical used in various applications.
  • Resins, Paints, and Coatings: Methoxy propanol is used in resins, paints, and coatings to improve viscosity and enhance the quality of these products.
  • Corrosion Inhibitor: In the metal industry, it acts as a rust inhibitor and is effective in removing stubborn contaminants and grease from metal and steel surfaces.

Safety and Handling:

  • Flammability: Methoxy propanol is highly flammable. It should be stored and handled away from open flames and sources of ignition.
  • Volatility: Due to its high evaporation rate, it should be used in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling fumes. Proper protective equipment should be worn during handling.
